Surface Modified Silicon Carbide Polymer Matrix Composite (SPMC) Additives

SPMC has been engineered over the past eight years and is available in several different grades.

SiC particles ranging in size from 0.5 to 17 microns are blended with a proprietary activator package of chemicals and subjected to high temperatures in a proprietary reaction vessel.  An exothermic reaction occurs, after which the SiC surface is both etched and coated.  It is believed that the etching contributes to greater mechanical bonding in the matrix and the coating contributes to lowering the surface co-efficient of friction.

Extensive third party testing suggests that single digit loadings of SPMC

A reduction in operating temperature of 15 degrees Fahrenheit in automobile belting and a two-fold increase in material flow (a phenolic) through an extruder have been reported.

It is believed that SPMC is efficacious in most if not all elastomers, with better results to be expected in harder materials.

SPMC loadings range from 2% to 9%, depending on the compound and application.  In certain polyurethane applications it is believed loadings over 10% may lead to optimum performance.

SPMC grades are engineered for use in rotating and reciprocating shaft seal applications, in sliding and impinging abrasion applications, and in coatings and lining applications.  A sample of the range of improvement to be expected include:

bullet

Epoxy coating: milligram weight loss reduced from 14 to 2.7.

bullet

HNBR stick-slip time reduced from 32.5 to 13.5 seconds.

bullet

PUR weight loss reduced from 19.4 to 11.9 mg.

bullet

PUR weight loss percentage reduced from 0.25 to 0.08.

bullet

HNBR friction reduced from 2.5+ to 0.1.

bullet

FKM static coefficient of friction reduced from 100 to 64.

bullet

Phenolic flow increased from 96.5 to 284.4 grams.
